Proposed Charters Get Public Hearings

Hearings are being held this month on a handful of charter schools that are hoping to open in the fall of 2013. The hearings, which are required under state law, are as follows:

—Wednesday, Aug. 8: Proposed charter schools for Staten Island. John W. Lavelle Preparatory Charter School North, to serve students in grades 6-10, and Staten Island Green Charter School for Environmental Discovery, to serve grades K-K. These applications are being considered by the State University of New York. Details can be found at this link. Hearing is at 6 p.m. at District 31 Office, Building A Cafeteria, 715 Ocean Terrace, Staten Island.

—Thursday, Aug. 9: Proposed charter school for Community School District 12 in the Bronx. The school would be called Pathways in Education, which plans to serve students in grades 9 to 12. This application is being considered by the State University of New York. Details can be found here. Hearing is at 6 p.m. at District 12 Office, 1434 Longfellow Avenue, the Bronx.

—Monday, Aug. 13: Proposed charter school for Community School District 4 in Manhattan. East Harlem Scholars Academy Charter School II plans to open for kindergarten to grade 5. This application is being considered by the State University of New York. Details can be found here. Hearing is at 6 p.m. at East Harlem Scholars Academy Building M013, 1573 Madison Avenue, Manhattan.

—Tuesday, Aug. 14: Proposed charter schools for Community School District 17 in Brooklyn. The Lamad Academy Charter School, to serve students in grades 5 to 8. This application is being considered by the State University of New York. Details can be found here. There is also a proposed Achievement First Central Brooklyn Charter School, for grades 5 to 12. This application is being considered by the New York State Education Department, links can be found here. Explore Enrich Charter School, for kindergarten to grade 7. This application is being considered by the State University of New York. Details can be found here. New Visions Charter High School for Advanced Math and Science III, to serve grades 9 to 12. This application is being considered by the New York State Education Department, links can be found here. And New Visions Charter High School for the Humanities III, for grades 9 to 12, which is also being considered by the State Education Department.
The hearing on all five charters will be at the District 17 office, 1224 Park Place, Brooklyn, at 6 p.m.
