District 6 Zoning Proposal Sparks Debate Over Choice

There are dueling approaches to school choice in northern Manhattan’s District 6: one would eliminate elementary school zones so families can apply to any school while another wants families to fight for improvements at the struggling schools so there isn’t such pressure on the better schools in the district.

Proposed High School Angers Parents at Gifted and Talented School

In another co-location conflict, parents at The Talented and Gifted School for Young Scholars in East Harlem, a kindergarten to 8th grade school, are upset about plans by the city to expand one of the schools with which they share their building into a high school. With seats in gifted and talented programs so limited, they say, the city should be allowing their school to grow.

On Thanksgiving, Stepping Up to the Plate

Scooping his food with a spork, Chancellor Dennis M. Walcott shared a pre-Thanksgiving meal with the children at Public School 56 Lewis H. Latimer in Brooklyn, and talked about the importance of healthy eating. “It’s fun because we can come together and we don’t get to see each other on Thanksgiving,” said Mahagany Young, 9, a fourth grader. “Everyone here is friends and family to us.”
