Julie Conason: Learning Through Relationships
The principal of one of the smallest high schools in the city, Humanities Preparatory Academy in Chelsea, embraced the opportunity to lead a school that does not "live and die by the Regents scores." With its alternative assessment system, the school has managed to raise the graduation rate to 95 percent from 41 percent in 2008. It also emphasizes strong values and a sense of responsibility by students, and, she says, "I’ve never seen it in action as much as I see it here." Read More »
