DOE Seeks to Phase Out 17 Schools in First Wave of Proposed Closures
The first list is out for this year's proposed school closings. It includes six schools in Brooklyn, five in the Bronx, four in Manhattan and two in Queens. Panel Approves Nine New Charters
In its final public meeting for 2012, the city's Panel for Educational Policy approved nine new charters schools and also approved a resolution to keep school lunches at the current price of $1.50, instead of $2.50 as proposed by the mayor. Read More »

City Scraps Change to G&T Policy, and Other News of Note
The city has scrapped a change in policy that would have taken away the sibling priority for children who test into gifted and talented programs. In other news, the Panel for Educational Policy is poised to approve seven more charter schools and the teachers union says it won't continue to negotiate the details of a new teacher evaluation deal unless the chancellor clarifies how it will roll out in the schools. Schools Open to Relieved Families and Challenges
Many schools welcomed back their students Monday after a week of storm-related closures. P.S. 100 in Brighton Beach was a welcoming -- and warm -- place for many residents who are still without power after the storm known as Sandy.
